A black Ford Focus moving southbound on College Avenue struck 20-year-old MU student Lauren O'Brien at about noon Wednesday, MU police said. According to Capt. Brian Weimer, O'Brien was attempting to cross four lanes of traffic from Bouchelle Avenue toward MU.
Weimer also said that O'Brien was issued a citation for failing to yield when crossing at a place other than a crosswalk. She was transported to University Hospital and was reportedly in good condition Wednesday afternoon.
“She was just lying there motionless,” said Nick Divecchio, a freshman at MU who lives at the Sigma Nu fraternity house located nearby.
Many East Campus residents cross College Avenue every day on their way to class. Divecchio said he was in shock watching the aftermath of the auto-pedestrian accident so close to his home.
College Avenue is usually busy “during the middle of the day,” Divecchio said, adding, “At nighttime it’s not as bad.”
The 21-year-old female driver of the Ford Focus did not receive a citation for the accident.
