PrintCOLUMBIA — What residents call a generally quiet neighborhood was disrupted Tuesday evening when a man was stabbed.
Columbia Police Sgt. Jason Carlyle said it was a domestic violence incident. He would not comment further.
"I heard her yell, ‘Help me, help me, he’s hurting me,'" neighbor James Hall said of the disturbance.
About to leave to celebrate his twentieth birthday, Hall put his planned festivities on hold when he heard those cries of a woman who lives there.
Responding to the woman's yells, Hall and his sister saw Paul D. Powell pull the woman into her trailer, they said. At some point, Powell was stabbed, according to police radio communications. It is unclear whether he stabbed himself or was stabbed.
Hall's sister, Tonya Derleth, 30, called 911, then beat on the trailer door, trying to bring her to safety, she said.
When police arrived, they put Powell in a police car. While waiting in the backseat, Powell mouthed “I’m gonna kill you” to the woman through the window.
Until an ambulance arrived, Powell spit at the inside windows and knocked himself against the backseat car doors. As dusk turned to darkness, Powell’s figure could be seen motioning at neighbor onlookers through the car’s windows.
Powell was fastened to a stretcher and accompanied onto the truck.
“You deprived me of my property, man. I need a receipt,” Powell repeatedly shouted to police as he was put into the ambulance.
Police returned to the woman's trailer for further investigation.
As of 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, Powell had left the hospital according to the University Hospital house manager.
