Dig to resume at farm of Mark Twain's uncle

FLORIDA, Mo. — An archaeological dig will resume again this fall at a Missouri farm Mark Twain called "a heavenly place for a boy."

Samuel Clemens, better known as author Mark Twain, was born in Florida, Mo., in 1835. His uncle, John Quarles, had a farm there, which is now owned by a retired schoolteacher, Karen Hunt.

For the past two years, she has allowed small numbers of volunteers to help with an archaeological dig on the grounds. She told the Hannibal Courier-Post the digs will begin again on Saturdays in September.

She says so far items like dishes, marbles and square nails have been found. She hopes one day to turn the site into a living history farm for tourists.
