ST. LOUIS — Cape Girardeau police say someone posed as a southeast Missouri woman on Facebook, sent out messages that she was stuck in England and asked friends to wire emergency funds.
Sgt. Jason Selzer said Wednesday the department was notified Aug. 26 of the scam, when another area woman explained she had wired "thousands" overseas after receiving the messages.
The woman told police she received messages sent through the social networking site that her real-life friend, Grace Parry, and Parry's husband were being detained in London and needed her help.
Parry tells the Southeast Missourian that someone locked her out of her Facebook account and posed as her. She was not in England at the time of the scam. About $4,000 was wired abroad before the hoax was discovered.
