COLUMBIA — Kortney Heidy, the senior setter for the Hickman volleyball team, left the gym with a smile on her face Thursday after the Kewpies fell to Rolla in two games.
“It was tough, but nothing we can’t fix,” Heidy said.
Heidy played throughout the game assisting her hitters, who couldn’t seem to get the job done.
“We had a lot of unforced errors,” Hickman coach Greg Gunn said, “especially hitting errors. We had a lot of hitting errors.”
With Rolla dominating the first game, 25-14, Hickman had to step it up and got a break in the second game when Rolla’s outside hitter rolled her ankle. Hickman took the lead at 16-15 with junior libero, Katelyn Foley serving.
For the next eight points, the game went back and forth. The gym was loud and the action became exciting, with players fighting for every ball.
Rolla made it to game-point, when Hickman senior outside-hitter Maria Vega-Westhoff earned a kill to bring the game back to 24-23. However, Hickman couldn’t pull it out and fell 25-23. The loss puts the Kewpies at 1-1.
“Rolla played well,” Gunn said. “We need to work on reducing unforced errors.”
Hickman is back on the court at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Boonville.
