COLUMBIA — The Columbia College women's volleyball team cruised through the first day of the Best Western Classic with victories over Savannah (Ga.) College of Art and Design and Missouri Baptist University.
The Cougars' Maria Omondi led the way in a 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 victory against SCAD in the day's early match. Omondi hammered 11 kills in 17 attempts. Fellow senior Cate Eckhardt posted 10 kills and Monica Santos chipped in nine kills. Cougars setter Paula Ferreira led the offense with 36 assists.
In a 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 win over Missouri Baptist, Eckhardt pounded 13 kills and added four aces. Ferreira had 30 assists.
Columbia College, ranked No. 6 in the preseason NAIA national ranking, continues play in the Best Western Classic on Saturday. The Cougars will take on Bryan (Tenn.) College at 1 p.m. and No. 14 ranked Lindenwood at 5 p.m. at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
