COLUMBIA — After going winless at home last season, the Hickman football team walloped Vashon 42-14 in its home opener Friday night.
“It’s a really good feeling, especially on our home field since we went 0-4 last year,” junior receiver Wesley Leftwich said. “Our team’s all about momentum. Once we get our confidence up, the sky's the limit.”

It took over a quarter for the Kewpies to find their groove, but once senior running back Tyrone Armstrong started to find holes, Hickman was able to take advantage of Vashon’s sloppy play.
Armstrong only had 34 rushing yards on the night, but he set up fellow running back Josh Williams to get the ball in the end zone. Williams finished the night with 25 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.
“That’s fine with me,” Williams said. “Tyrone Armstrong did a great job getting us down to the goal line and in the red zone. They just gave me the ball and I put it in.”
Hickman’s defense held Vashon to seven total yards and put them in reverse in the first half when the Wolverines lost 48 yards on offense.
“Last week we gave up I think 500 yards,” Williams said. “We had to come back this week and put down a strong defensive performance. We’re satisfied with the defense, but we wish we could have gotten a goose egg, a shutout.”
Special teams separated the teams Friday night. When both were struggling early, Vashon made matters worse by barely being able to punt the ball.
The Wolverines lined up to punt eight times in the first half, two of which were partially blocked, another time the punter fumbled while on the move and he was also brought down in the backfield on another punt attempt.
“That(special teams) should be big,” coach Jason Wright said. “As much time as we work on it, it should be big. We just got to have some guys that want to have the heart and the desire to make a play and we got that tonight.”
Senior quarterback Matt Herman had a solid night going 8-15 for 141 yards and a touchdown. He’ll attempt to lead Hickman to its second win of the season next week when the Kewpies visit Park Hill.
