COLUMBIA - The Columbia College womens volleyball team won the Best Western Classic. The Cougars, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA preseason, went 2-0 Friday with wins over Savannah College of Art and Design and Missouri Baptist University.
In Saturday’s first match, Columbia beat Bryan College handily 25-11, 25-9, 25-22. Cate Eckhardt led the Cougars with 15 kills while Tally Mattos tallied six aces and 10 digs.
The Columbia College women's volleyball team plays again against Stephens College at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Columbia College's The Arena of Southwell Complex.
In its final match, Columbia beat No. 14 Lindenwood University, 25-13, 25-17, 25-22. Once again Eckhardt contributed to the Cougars' offense with 15 kills and four aces. Monica Santos also had 13 kills while Paula Ferreira had 33 assists and 10 digs.
At the end of the tournament Eckhardt was given the title of most valuable player with over 50 kills throughout the tournament. Columbia’s Mattos, Ferreira, and Mario Omondi were also named to the 12-player all-tournament team.
