Lakes' E. coli levels acceptable even after recent sewage spillage

JEFFERSON CITY — The Department of Natural Resources said test results show falling E. coli levels on a western Missouri lake contaminated by a sewage spill last week.
E. coli tests from Monday showed bacterial levels are below the state standards on Prairie Lee Lake near Kansas City.

Several thousand gallons of untreated sewage spilled into Prairie Lee Lake late Sept. 3. A pump station was turned off Sept. 3 for maintenance and wasn't turned back on, which caused sewage to flow into Prairie Lee Lake. Officials were concerned sewage contamination could spread to nearby Lake Jacomo.
The state Department of Natural Resources says E. coli levels on Lake Jacomo also are below state standards.
