HANNIBAL — Last year it was flooding, this year the recession. But Hannibal's tourism director says attractions in Mark Twain's hometown did well this summer.
Memorial Day through Labor Day is the traditional tourism season, and Beau Hicks of the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau told the Hannibal Courier-Post that this season was a pleasant surprise.
Hicks says the Mark Twain Cave, the riverboat and downtown businesses all reported good years. He believes an aggressive marketing campaign focused on drawing visitors from the St. Louis region helped. The campaign will continue through October.
