ROLLA — Thor Hushovd of Norway has won the third stage of the Tour of Missouri, outsprinting the pack in the final meters.
Hushovd, of Cervelo Test, made the move after a series of short-lived breakaways late in the 114.3-mile road race from Farmington to Rolla on Wednesday. Juan Jose Haedo of Saxo Bank finished second. Dario Cataldo of Quick Step was third.
According to the event's Web site, broadcast coverage of the Tour of Missouri, a 612-mile, seven-day world-class professional cycling race, will air nationally with a 30-minute recap show on Versus at midnight CDT every night of the competition. Fox Sports Midwest has scheduled regional broadcast coverage of the race from 10:30 to 11 p.m. on Sept. 7, 8 and 9; from 11:30 to midnight on Sept. 10 and 11 and from 11 to 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 12, though other events might change show times. Coverage of the race can also be found on the Internet at universalsports.com and tourofmissouri.com, as well as kmov.com in St. Louis and kmbc.com in Kansas City.
Britain's Mark Cavendish, of Columbia-HTC, had won the first two stages but finished fifth Wednesday behind Daniel Oss.
The third stage was considered one of the toughest in the weeklong race, with more than 6,000 feet of climbing. Three riders broke away from the main pack about five miles in, creating a gap of almost four minutes at one point.
The race concludes Sunday in Kansas City.
