KANSAS CITY — Federal officials have approved a proposal to rebuild Interstate 70 in Missouri to include lanes only for trucks.
The Federal Highway Administration's decision gives Missouri approval to continue discussing the $4 billion project, but funding is a major hurdle.
Pete Rahn, director of the Missouri Department of Transportation, said the state would begin the project right away if it had the money.
The Kansas City Star reports that Missouri plans to seek $200 million in federal stimulus money to build the truck lanes on 30 miles of Interstate 70 in Cooper and Saline counties. That segment would be used to test the concept while the state tries to find funding for the larger project.
