UMKC, Missouri State agree to expand pharmacy degrees

SPRINGFIELD — Two Missouri universities are teaming up to expand opportunities for students to earn a doctor of pharmacy degree.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City has agreed to offer a satellite doctoral program at the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield. The two schools signed the cooperative agreement Tuesday.

But the new pharmacy program at MSU is dependent on the legislature providing a continuing funding source.

Data from the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center show the state could face a shortage of 700 pharmacists by the year 2012.

About 600 students apply each year for UMKC's five-year doctoral program, which admits only 123 students. The expansion to MSU should allow that number to increase.
