Nixon, AmerenUE to announce plan using methane gas for energy Thursday

MARYLAND HEIGHTS — An effort in suburban St. Louis will utilize something there's plenty of — methane gas from a landfill — and turn it into energy.

Gov. Jay Nixon, AmerenUE president Warner Baxter and others on Thursday will announce plans for a collaboration to turn methane gas into 15 megawatts of power, roughly enough to provide electricity for 10,000 homes.

The plan calls for installing combustion turbines at Fred Weber Inc.'s solid waste landfill in Maryland Heights. The "Methane to Megawatts" operation is expected to be up and running by 2011. Ameren says the project will be the largest landfill gas-electric facility in Missouri and among the largest in the nation.
