CAPE GIRARDEAU — A man has been sentenced to three years in prison for vandalizing the Islamic Center in Cape Girardeau.

Thirty-two-year-old Nicholas T. Proffit of Cape Girardeau was sentenced Tuesday on two counts of property damage under Missouri's hate crimes law, a felony. He also was sentenced to six months on one count of driving while intoxicated.

The Southeast Missourian reports that on May 31 a large glass window was broken at the center, along with smaller windows on doors. Also, the windshield of a white Mercedes-Benz parked on the lot was cracked.

Witnesses told police they saw a man throwing rocks at the windows and yelling. Police later stopped Proffit's car, and he had nine rocks in his pocket.
