JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri Water Patrol says drownings on the state's waterways are down nearly 50 percent from 2007 and 2008.
The patrol reports 23 drownings so far this year, compared with 42 at the same point in each of the past two years. Fatal boating accidents are also down, from 17 by early September last year to 11 this year.
Over the Labor Day weekend, the patrol says a half-dozen people were injured in Missouri boating accidents, but there were no fatalities.
The Water Patrol is warning boaters to be cautious as the weather cools down because many people are on the water to hunt or fish and may be distracted.
