American wins fifth stage of Tour of Missouri

SEDALIA — American David Zabriskie won the time trial in the fifth stage of the Tour of Missouri and took the overall lead.

Zabriskie, riding for Garmin-Slipstream, completed Friday's flat, fast 19-mile course in 36 minutes and 30 seconds.

Race coverage

According to the event's Web site, broadcast coverage of the Tour of Missouri, a 612-mile, seven-day world-class professional cycling race, will air nationally with a 30-minute recap show on Versus at midnight CDT every night of the competition. Fox Sports Midwest has scheduled regional broadcast coverage of the race from 11:30 to midnight on Sept. 11 and from 11 to 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 12, though other events might change show times. Coverage of the race can also be found on the Internet at universalsports.com and tourofmissouri.com, as well as kmov.com in St. Louis and kmbc.com in Kansas City.

Finishing 30 seconds behind, Gustav Larsson, of Team Saxo Bank, finished second.

American Tom Zirbel, of Bissell Pro Cycling, finished third and Marco Pinotti, of Team Columbia-HTC, finished fourth.

With close sprint finishes in the first four stages of the weeklong race, the time trial created the first gaps in the overall standings. Juan Jose Haedo and Thor Hushovd led before Friday's time trial.

Next the riders race 110.3 miles from Chillicothe to St. Joseph on Saturday and then finish with a circuit stage in Kansas City on Sunday.
