COLUMBIA — A cozy corner cubicle never appealed much to Mandy Schick.
“When I finished my master's I decided I didn’t want an office job, and I didn’t want a nine to five job, and so I decided that I would try personal training,” said Schick, who has been a personal trainer for the last three years. Schick holds a master’s degree in education and athletic administration in addition to being a certified personal trainer.
The career choice was a perfect fit for Schick, who said she really enjoys teaching people about fitness. Her job as a personal trainer keeps her constantly on the move from one client’s home to another.
“Most people want to train at home for whatever reason, they have kids, their time is busy… and that’s the other thing, a lot of people won’t actually go to the gym,” she said.
Amy Pugh, who has been training three times a week from home with Schick for a year and a half, agrees. “If she didn’t come, I wouldn’t do it,” Pugh said.
Schick said she has no trouble putting her clients through challenging workouts.
“I’ve never asked anyone to do something that I haven’t done to myself, so I don’t feel too guilty about making somebody work out while I just watch,” she said.
For Schick, personal training means more than planning a workout; she gets to know her clients well.
“We might not go out and have drinks together, but I consider them to be my friends…I like building those relationships," she said. "When you are done training people they are very sincere about thanking you and they really honestly feel like they got something out of it.”
