Two sentenced in Kansas City woman's death at meth lab

KANSAS CITY — Two Kansas City men were sentenced to lengthy terms in federal prison in the death of a woman who mistakenly drank lye at a meth lab they operated.

Thirty-year-old Benjamin T. Clarkson was sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison and 39-year-old John D. Williams was sentenced to 25 years for the death of 24-year-old Carly Morris.

The two men each pleaded guilty last November to conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine and creating substantial risk of harm to human life while manufacturing the drug.

Prosecutors said that on Oct. 12, 2007, Morris went to the men's rented home in Kansas City to get methamphetamine. They say she took a drink from a soda bottle, not realizing that it contained diluted lye, which is used to make methamphetamine.

When Morris began vomiting blood, Williams took her to her home rather than seeking medical help.

Doctors who testified at the sentencing hearing said Morris suffered a long and painful decline before dying on Oct. 22, 2007.
