JEFFERSON CITY — Former Republican state treasurer Sarah Steelman has ended months of speculation by announcing she will not run for the U.S. Senate next year.
Steelman said she struggled with the decision but ultimately chose not to run because she wants to raise her children in Missouri. A longtime adviser and friend of Steelman released a statement late Tuesday night on her behalf announcing her decision.
Steelman ran unsuccessfully for governor last year and had said she was seriously considering a Senate bid after Republican Sen. Kit Bond announced in January that he would not seek re-election.
Republican Rep. Roy Blunt and state Sen. Chuck Purgason already have declared their candidacies for Bond's seat. Secretary of State Robin Carnahan is the only Democrat in the race.
