KALONA, Iowa — An unsuspecting Missouri couple has received an all-expense paid tour of Kalona as part of a tourism gimmick to get people to visit the southeast Iowa town.
Last week the town's Chamber of Commerce and Washington County sheriff pulled over people with out-of-state license plates and offered them a free visit to the town of about 2,300, southwest of Iowa City.
Chamber member Larry Moeller and Sheriff Jerry Dunbar ended up stopping Ron and Cheri Cunningham of Sedalia.
The couple says they had no idea why they were being stopped but after finding out what was happening they happily played along.
They received a basket of goods from local stores, a tour of local attractions and a free night's lodging in Kalona.
They also received T-shirts that read "Ask me about Kalona, Iowa."
