Soybean rust found in three southeast Missouri counties

ST. LOUIS — Soybean rust has been discovered in fields in three southeast Missouri counties, but it may be late enough in the growing season that yields may not be affected.

MU Extension said the fungal disease was discovered Friday on fields in three southernmost counties — New Madrid, Pemiscot and Dunklin.

The extension program said rust has been found over the past week or so in a growing number of counties in Arkansas, northern Mississippi and Louisiana. Winds from the south probably carried spores from infected fields into Missouri.

But MU Extension plant pathologist Allen Wrather said the rust arrived so late in the growing season that Missouri producers may not have to spray fungicide.
