Joplin plans campaign to attract thousands of new jobs

JOPLIN — A new campaign aimed at attracting thousands of jobs to southwest Missouri will be announced this week.

The $3.5 million effort, called the Joplin Regional Prosperity Initiative, will start next year and continue for the next five years. The Joplin Globe reported that the initiative's goal is to create 4,000 direct jobs and 2,596 indirect jobs through new business attraction, business expansion and small-business development.

Indirect jobs are created when new jobs are brought to a market.

The campaign will build on an earlier effort that is credited with producing about 4,300 direct and indirect new jobs over five years.

So far, 14 entities have signed on, including Missouri Southern State University and the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce.

A kickoff breakfast is planned for Thursday.
