COLUMBIA — The Show-Me State Games named its 2009 athletes of the year and inducted three people into its hall of honor on Monday.
Mike Brooke, 55, of Booneville, and Karen Johnson, 54, of Columbia, were named as Show-Me State athletes of the year for 2009, and Jean Hough, Dr. William Allen, and Judy Egelhoff were inducted into the hall of honor.
Brooke, who has medaled in shooting in past years, was honored for organizing a team of shooters, ages 12-14, and mentoring them. His team won 13 medals, including Brooke's silver medal in the 5-stand competition. In addition, Brooke was recognized for learning to shoot with his left hand after he lost his right arm in an accident.
Johnson, who won the gold medal in the women's golf competition for the 50-59 age group, broke the record for her age division by eight strokes.
Hough, Allen and Egelhoff were all inducted into the hall of honor because of their sustained involvement with the games. Hough has volunteered at the games since 1987, and Allen, as the chair of the first Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health, played a key role in organizing the first Show-Me State Games. Egelhoff, who began her affiliation with the games as a student assistant in 1987, was instrumental in managing the Show-Me State Games in their early years.
The Show-Me State Games began in 1985 and take place each summer at MU.
