Missouri overpaying officials to move prisoners

JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri state auditor says the Department of Corrections has overpaid county officials for moving prisoners.

Missouri sheriffs are reimbursed by the state for housing inmates who have been sentenced to prison, moving inmates and transporting extradited inmates.

The state auditor blamed billing errors for overpayments to some counties. Some sheriffs provided too little information on their bills. Others submitted expenses exceeding federal guidelines.

The audit recommends that state prison officials expand monitoring procedures and consider using an electronic billing system.

The Corrections Department says it agrees with some of the recommendations. The department said developing an electronic billing system would require broad coordination.
