LETTER: Religious statement in headline impossible to prove

Words cannot adequately describe my horror when I read the headline of the front page story of your paper on Sept. 23.

The headline reads, "God told Luticha Griffin to build a school." The first paragraph of the story echoes that statement, which is presented as a fact. How much harder would it have been to have written instead "Luticha Griffin felt that God wanted her to build a school" or something similar?

A subtle rewording would have completely altered the tone of article. I personally have a hard time believing that we can find any corroborating evidence to support God's involvement in this decision. I understand that this nation is predominantly Christian, but it is not our state religion, (thankfully society has moved away from this type of thing) and religious statements of this sort have no business on the front page of any newspaper.
