COLUMBIA — The Boone County Sheriff's Department warned people to be aware of a potential texting scam.

The Joint Communications Center has received at least 50 phone calls from citizens who have received texts saying their "service" has been discontinued. The text doesn't specify which services have been discontinued, but it instructs the person receiving it to call a phone number and provide a credit card number to reinstate them.

The Sheriff's Department recommends that citizens never give out personal information to unsolicited phone calls. Legitimate businesses will not ask for that information unsolicited.
