Two goals from Yudai Yamaguchi propelled the Columbia College soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Missouri Baptist on Tuesday night in St. Louis to put the Cougars at 2-0 in the American Midwest Conference.
Yamaguchi scored in the 33rd minute off assists from Jimmy Herrman and Dylan Barduzzi to give the Cougars at 1-0 lead at halftime. Then after the Spartans tied the game early in the second half, Yamaguchi put the Cougars ahead for good in the 64th minute off another assist from Barduzzi, who was named last week's AMC offensive player of the week. Tim Tevlin scored the Cougars' third goal off an assist from Lloyd Jacobs in the 88th minute.
Alex Rangel had four saves in goal for the Cougars (8-2-1), who are No. 25 in this week's NAIA top 25 poll. Fellow Cougars goalkeeper Ken Searles was named last week's AMC defensive player of the week.
Missouri Baptist falls to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in the AMC.
Columbia plays at 7 p.m. next Tuesday against McKendree (Ill.) University at R. Marvin Owens Soccer Stadium. The Bearcats are No. 5 in the NAIA.
