PrintCOLUMBIA — A man was arrested Monday night after police said he tried to rob a Columbia police officer.
An undercover officer was getting ready to perform an alcohol compliance check at the Ultra Mart convenience store on Paris Road when David W. Riley left the store and demanded the officer’s wallet, police said.
The officer drew his gun and showed his police badge, according to a news release. More officers responded to the scene soon after.
Police said Riley was not cooperative, and officers took him into custody. They arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery and resisting arrest.
Riley is being held at the Boone County Jail.

The nice thing is that with CCW in Missouri, that intended victim did not need to be an undercover cop. There is now a good chance that David Riley could have just as easily attempted to rob an ordinary but armed citizen. The difference would be that Mr. Riley would have stood a better chance of being shot by the armed citizen than he did by robbing a cop. The real lesson is that this sort of crime can happen anytime, anywhere, and that taking the class and getting one's CCW permit is a good idea for any honest person.
