COLUMBIA — Firefighters and police responded to a residential fire on Duncan Street that resulted in about $50,000 in damages. The fire was reported by neighbors at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday after they saw smoke coming from the house, Columbia Fire Department Capt. Eric Hartman said.
When fire crew and police officers arrived, they saw visible smoke and flames coming from the back of the house. The fire was extinguished in about 10 to 15 minutes, Hartman said.
Hartman said no one was home at the time, and firefighters are working to determine the cause.
The American Red Cross is helping the family find housing and providing other disaster relief assistance.
