Longtime St. Joseph News-Press photographer dies at 61

ST. JOSEPH — Ival Lawhon Jr., the longtime staff photographer of the St. Joseph News-Press, who kept a police scanner at his bedside and chronicled three decades of fires, floods and ordinary life, has died.

Lawhon died Saturday night of pancreatic cancer at a local hospital. He was 61.

The veteran photographer worked at the News-Press for 31 years, retiring in 2008. The News-Press described his work as a "visual catalog of life" in St. Joseph and northwest Missouri. He captured countless fires, the Great Flood of 1993 and personal stories.

Lawhon was to have been inducted into the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame on Oct. 22 in Washington, Mo.

He taught photography at Missouri Western State University and was a decorated Vietnam War veteran. He is survived by his wife, Renee.
