COLUMBIA — The threat of heavy rain has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood watch for Boone County from Thursday morning through Friday morning.

The Weather Service, in a statement issued at 4:18 a.m. Wednesday, said a slow-moving cold front approaching the region will combine with low perssure forecast to develop along the front to create "a prolonged period of showers and thunderstorms" across southern and central Missouri.

The Weather Service said 2 to 4 inches of rain should be expected Thursday and Thursday night with locally heavier amounts of 3 to 5 inches along or just south of Interstate 44.

Flash flood and flood watches were posted Wednesday morning for most of the southern half of the state.
