Sprinklers extinguish fire outside Paquin Tower

COLUMBIA — The Columbia Fire Department responded to a 911 call Saturday morning that reported smoke in the loading dock and maintenance area of Paquin Tower.

Upon arrival at the tower, 1201 Paquin St., the unit discovered that a fire had started in a Dumpster, but the automatic sprinklers had activated and extinguished the fire.

When the sprinklers activated, a switch in the system was triggered and it sent an automatic alert to the Public Safety Joint Communications Center.

Five years ago, The Columbia Housing Authority installed automatic sprinklers in Paquin Towers. According to the department, if the sprinklers had not been installed, the potential damage from the fire could have been much more severe.

The building was not damaged and there were no evacuations.
