USS Missouri to be refurbished

HONOLULU — The USS Missouri, the last battleship built by the United States, is about to head to a dry dock for substantial refurbishing.

The 887-foot vessel has been moored near the sunken USS Arizona, an icon of the start of U.S. involvement in World War II when it was bombed by Japanese planes on Dec. 7, 1941.

The Missouri was the ship on which Japanese leaders signed surrender papers on Sept. 2, 1945.

On Wednesday, the ship will be towed two miles to a dry dock. It will be sandblasted and fully repainted, and its hull will be repairedThe refurbishing will cost $18 million.

It is scheduled to leave the dry dock in early January.

A "soft" reopening is set for mid-January and a grand opening for Jan. 29, the 66th anniversary of the battleship's launching from the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
