LETTER: Individual, not group, filed early voting petition

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 | 1:46 p.m. CDT

I appreciate the Missourian's willingness to publish a clarification of the misleading implications of its Oct. 8 story on the early voting petition, but I was dismayed to find the linkage reinstated on the Oct. 11 editorial page.

While it is factually accurate that I belong to the League of Women Voters, my membership in that group has about as much bearing on my decision to file the petition as the fact that I belong to the local genealogical society or eat oatmeal for breakfast. I filed the petition as an individual, pure and simple.

The implications of continuing to assert that particular false connection are damaging to both me and to the League of Women Voters, which values and protects its reputation as an independent voice for its members and a source of reliable and impartial information for the public. It has many members with concerns in many areas, but its members speak for themselves.
