COLUMBIA — Ten of the 30 entries that Boone County received in its contest to create a logo for its stormwater management program have been chosen as finalists.
The 10 high school students whose artwork was chosen will be invited to participate in a design class with MU associate professor and director of undergraduate studies Deborah Huelsbergen. There, students’ designs will be refined before a final round of judging.
“We would love to have the public's input on what designs they like,” county stormwater educator Nicki Brown said, “but the county, city and MU will have the final decision on the logo.”
The winner of the competition will see his or her design used on materials designed to educate the public on stormwater policies. Those will include brochures, Web sites, pencils and pens, Brown said.
The effort is part of the “outreach and education” aspect of the stormwater program. It aims at educating the public on the Environmental Protection Agency’s requirement to prevent runoff and downstream erosion and generally keep pollutants out of streams.
The first-place winner will receive $100, and his or her art teacher will receive $200 to use for classroom supplies. Second- and third-place winners will receive $50 each.
There is no precise timeline for picking a winner. Students will take part in the design class sometime after late October, Brown said. She added that the public can expect to see the new stormwater logo on educational supplies sometime around the first of the year.
