JEFFERSON CITY — A Missouri Department of Transportation maintenance crew leader is walking halfway across the state to remind people to be careful in work zones.

Jim Feeney works in the department's St. Louis district. He is taking time off to walk 87.2 miles on the Katy Trail to raise money for a memorial to honor transportation workers killed while at work. Feeney also wants motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in road work zones.

Since 1946, there have been 128 transportation workers killed.
