Ribbon-cutting Monday to highlight energy from Jefferson City landfill

JEFFERSON CITY — State officials are highlighting a project that uses methane gas from a landfill to provide electricity for homes and hot water for prisoners.

Work on the project at the Jefferson City landfill began two-and-a-half years ago. Gov. Jay Nixon and other state and local officials were to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday for the renewable energy project.

Gas from the landfill is being captured and piped to a generation facility where it is being used to create energy purchased by Columbia Water and Light. The heat generated by engines at the facility is being used to supply steam and hot water for two nearby state prisons.
