COLUMBIA — When a first quarter pass from Troy Buchanan’s Ben Chaney was deflected into the air and came down into Hickman defensive tackle Josh German’s arms for his first high school interception, the wide-bodied Kewpie found himself in uncharted waters.
“I was a little surprised that I got it," German said. "I just tried to go as far as I could with it.”

German was tackled within a few steps of making the catch, but the Kewpies converted the ensuing possession into three points to claim the early lead.
As it did during the first-quarter play that gave German his interception, the ball bounced Hickman’s way all night in a 53-14 rout of the Trojans on Friday at Hickman that gave the Kewpies their fourth win of the season. The Kewpies scored 44 points in the first half while a swarming Hickman defense held Troy Buchanan scoreless before the Kewpies' starters were replaced at the start of the second half.
For Hickman coach Jason Wright, the blowout win helped ease the pain of last week’s 42-38 loss to Fort Zumwalt West.
“Our theme this week was fundamentals, focus, and faith,” Wright said. “I’m so proud of these guys to bounce back from that emotional loss last week. We needed to experience something good.
“Whether you win by one or 40-whatever, it’s still a solid win. In retrospect, it’s a perfect score because we got to rest some guys as the game moved along.”
With rival Jefferson City up next on Hickman’s schedule, a little time off might be just what the Kewpies' starters needed. The Jays defeated Troy Buchanan 56-6 last week and should be a formidable opponent for Hickman.
German, who also forced a fumble in the end zone that was recovered by linebacker Josh Williams for a touchdown, thinks his team will have their toughest week of practice before their showdown with the Jays.
“We’re going to be practicing harder than we’ve ever been this whole year. Hopefully we can get a berth in the playoffs,” German said.
