The Rock Bridge football team clung to a seven-point lead with the Blue Springs South offense driving in Bruins' territory with less than three minutes to play.
The Jaguars put the ball into the hands of running back Calvin Gilyard, who had given the Bruins defense fits all night. He carried it into the end zone.
“A lot of plays, a lot of yards,” Bruins coach A.J. Ofodile said of Gilyard’s night. "I don’t know if we have anyone as fast as him. Speed kills. We thought we were going to have to line up and score some more points.”
Rock Bridge didn’t need to. The Jaguars were penalized for having an ineligible receiver on the scoring play, nullifying the touchdown.
“We were relieved when we saw the flag on the ground,” Ofodile said. “We’re fortunate.”
The Bruins (5-4, 1-1) kept their lead and won 41-34 over Blue Springs South (4-5, 0-2) on Friday in Blue Springs.
Running back Trey Millard was a big part of the Bruins' win. He rushed for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns, two in each half. Rock Bridge quarterback Mark Pickerel also rushed for a touchdown and threw for another.
Each side's offense produced big gains, something that happened all night.
“It was the same thing with both teams,” Ofodile said. “Both teams played hard, but there were some lapses for both defenses. It was a pretty exciting game. It was a very exciting game to be a part of. We don’t get many opportunities to beat Blue Springs South. To get a win against them is good for our program.”
