COLUMBIA — The Free Tiger, a new independent Web site for the MU campus,  is making a run at providing news, fiction and comics for students.

Conceptualized by Eva Dou and Brendan Gibbons, two journalism majors, the site launched Oct. 2.

According to Gibbons, the site includes a section for fiction and short stories as well as comics by students. Several blogs are also featured on the site, including a fashion blog. Another blog tells students about opportunities for free food on campus.

Josh Barone, editor-in-chief of The Maneater, MU's student newspaper, said he supports the effort. He praised Dou for launching the site.

"She couldn't find an outlet on campus to do exactly what she wanted journalistically, so she created her own," Barone said.

Currently, Gibbons and Dou are working on increasing the number of writers, income from advertisements and awareness about the site on campus.

"It's been really fun and really cool watching this come together," said Gibbons.
