Tests show soil recontamination near eastern Missouri lead smelter

ST. LOUIS — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says tests have found contaminated soil at more than one-third of residential properties near an eastern Missouri lead smelter.

The agency's regional office said Monday it's considering various enforcement actions against the Doe Run Co., in light of the results of soil tests near the company's smelter in Herculaneum.

The EPA says a third of those properties show lead in the soil exceeding its threshold for removing and replacing such soils.

Many of the properties already had soil remediation within the past nine years under previous EPA orders.

EPA says Doe Run has taken steps in recent years to reduce lead emissions but the efforts fall short. The company did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
