Students stumble upon champion oak lurking in MU-St. Louis cemetery

ST. LOUIS — Students learning to measure trees in an urban forestry class at the University of Missouri-St. Louis actually discovered the state's largest known shingle oak.

The school says faculty and students in the honors environmental research program recorded a 114-foot-tall shingle oak with an 81-foot crown spread. The tree measures more than 137 inches around.

It's located at the Daughters of Charity cemetery on the university's south campus.

Missouri's previous documented champion shingle oak was in Greene County, in the southwestern part of the state.
