Flash flood warning for Boone County

The flood watch for Boone County was upgraded late Thursday afternoon to a flash flood warning until 10 p.m. Thursday.

At 4:43 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service in St. Louis said radar indicated thunderstorms with heavy rain moving out of the Ozarks and into Central Missouri.

"The rains of earlier today have left many creeks and streams at bank full, and this next round of moderate to occasionally heavy rain will make flash flooding a very real possibility," the warning statement reads. Areas along and east of a line from Jefferson City to Mexico, Mo., had the heaviest rains earlier Thursday and were "of special concern," the Weather Service said.

Sanborn Field on the MU campus had recorded 0.27 inches of rain on Thursday through 4:55 p.m. The Weather Service said it expects about an additional inch of rain early Thursday evening with more possible overnight.

Other area counties under a flash flood warning included Audrain, Callaway, Cole and Moniteau. A potential dam break advisory has been issued for Renn's Lake in Cole County. According to a news release from the Cole County Sheriff's Office, there were crews working to relieve the pressure by pumping water or the spillway. 

Roads will be closed at Highway 54 and the Tractor Supply at Cody Drive.
