Missouri air quality programs receive $2.3 million

JEFFERSON CITY— Four local agencies in Missouri are to receive $2.3 million in grants to help pay for monitoring air pollution levels.

Gov. Jay Nixon on Wednesday said the state Department of Natural Resources was providing the mix of state and federal dollars to the four agencies.

The St. Louis county and city health departments will together receive almost $1.6 million. The Kansas City Health Department will get more than $483,000, and the Springfield-Greene County Health Department will receive almost $277,000.

The money is to go toward monitoring air pollution levels in each city. St. Louis and Kansas City are already reporting air quality levels below federal standards, which could lead to penalties.
