Federal report: Missouri has high math, reading standards

JEFFERSON CITY — A U.S. Department of Education report says Missouri uses some of the nation's most stringent standards for evaluating its students.

A study released Thursday by the National Center for Education Statistics compared states' standards for judging proficiency in math and reading by fourth- and eighth-grade students. The study focused on 2005 and 2007 assessments.

Missouri has the second highest standards in reading for fourth- and eighth-graders. It has the second highest standards for fourth-graders in math, and it is the fourth most stringent in math for eighth-graders.

Missouri Commissioner of Education Chris Nicastro said the study verifies Missouri has set high expectations for its students and schools.
