COLUMBIA - Investigations are underway by the Boone County Sheriff’s Department after a report of a man being shot in the leg Thursday night.

Deputies responded to a complaint about shots fired at around 8 p.m in the 100 block of Sanders Court in northeast Columbia, an area that is primarily apartments. According to a news release from the department, deputies found a 26-year-old male resident who had been shot in the leg with a handgun.

The victim said a man had forced open the door and demanded money while brandishing a handgun. When the victim didn't give the suspect money, he was shot in the leg, said Maj. Tom Reddin. The victim was transported to the hospital by ambulance, treated for non-life threatening injuries, and released.

Deputies think the shooting might be drug-related. They discovered evidence of drug activity at the residence during their investigation, Reddin said.

The suspect is described as a male wearing blue jeans, white high-top shoes, a red “76’ers” jacket and a white rag covering his face.
