PrintCOLUMBIA — The city of Columbia is inviting applicants for the 2010 Neighborhood Leadership Program, which aims to help residents participate more in the community and share ideas.
Residents can apply online until Dec. 1. Twenty-five applicants will be accepted by Jan. 1, 2010. There is a $25 registration fee. Scholarships are available.
Meetings will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday for eight weeks at the Chamber of Commerce building, 300 S. Providence Road. The first meeting is Jan. 19 and the last is April 20.
"Anyone within the city is welcome to apply, even if they are not a part of a formal neighborhood association," Neighborhood Services Manager Leigh Britt said.
Session topics include an overview of local government, public safety, code enforcement and ideas to strengthen neighborhoods. The program's purpose is to help those who serve in leadership roles in the neighborhoods, or have an interest in becoming active.
“You can become active by having a clean up event or working on a safety issue, like a strong neighborhood watch," Britt said.
