PrintIt’s great that we have our own power plant. Not many campuses can say that, or have that much control over their power consumption. We have the control to say what we use or burn in our power plants.
Since we have our own power plant, we have the ability to choose what we use. It was crazy for me to recently find out that the university uses 80 percent coal in the plant to provide our energy.
Coal is very hard on not only our environment, but the health of the people living in the surrounding area. By eliminating the use of coal on campus, we could lessen the amount of toxic waste we emit into the environment.
We can cut down on power needs by employing aggressive energy efficiency and conservation programs, and save money while doing it, such as the $4.6 million Energy Management has saved annually from conservation efforts here at Mizzou. The university is in the process of completing a biomass boiler, which will reduce our amount of coal consumption by up to 5 percent.
Though the university is working toward improving our energy efficiency, we can do more and hopefully eliminate coal consumption.
