Missouri transportation officials prepare for winter

JEFFERSON CITY — Even though it's still fairly warm, Missouri transportation officials are getting ready for winter weather.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has stocked up on salt and prepared its equipment for handling snow and ice. In 2008, 30 people were killed and nearly 3,000 injured in traffic accidents during snowy, icy or slushy weather.

Transportation officials first clear interstate highways and other major routes, and work continuously to keep them cleared during a storm. Less traveled highways are cleared for two-way traffic and salt is laid down on intersections, hills and curves.
